Rosta Caffe was formed to question and rethink EVERYTHING about coffee to improve its sustainability, with a particular focus on improving farm-level sustainability in the increasingly ecologically threatened areas around the world where most premium coffees are grown.
Coffee industry practices today focus attention and financial returns away from farm-level. Very little of the money you spend on your coffee makes it back to the farms and farmers that grow your coffee beans, resulting in chronic wide-spread poverty among small-holder coffee farmers in most parts of the world. This means these farmers generally farm extractively rather than sustainably because they're literally just trying to survive and put food on the table for their families as they live in poverty, or barely above the line.
Rosta Caffe is committed to improving the sustainability of the entire coffee ecosystem, with a special focus on the lives and sustainability of farmers and their farms that grow your coffee.
This is a noble goal, of course. But how can we make an impact of the significance and scale required to really improve small-holder farmers’ lives and the sustainability of a vast coffee industry spread all around such remote, ecologically sensitive areas of the world? That's the question Rosta Caffe started with five years ago.
We've now got some very exciting answers taking shape - From Soil to Savour.™ Along with being sustainability geeks and talented multi-disciplinary engineers and agrarians, we're also die-hard foodies. We know anything that's going to make a real sustainability impact at global scale has to be based on simply accessible, truly amazing tasting coffee. While our work starts with farms and farmers and their soil and sustainability, we end with you, relaxing, savouring your delicious coffee. And it's got to be truly amazing coffee or this isn’t really going to work!
Amazing coffee is the result of healthy, highest-quality coffee plants, grown under carefully developed and maintained natural conditions, with their cherries picked at their peak of ripeness, processed promptly and cleanly, and their beans stored and shipped under proper conditions, then carefully roasted to develop and deepen their unique flavor profiles and freshly ground and properly brewed to bring forth all the delicious flavors and nuances that these many carefully choreographed steps create and deliver to your cup, just for you. Simple? Not really! The key is identifying, aligning and innovating high-impact aspects of the four underlined steps - growing, processing, roasting and brewing - all together for optimum results. And that's exactly what Rosta Caffe is doing. We're several years into developing farm-level relationships, growing farming knowledge and breakthrough processing, roasting and brewing techniques and technologies to rethink and better align each of these four steps in unique new ways.
That's all we can say for now! But we're working on several substantial breakthroughs that are going to make a very real sustainability impact in the world of coffee. And in the process, we're making truly amazing and savourable coffee!
